First Tee – Naples/Collier STEMLinks Program
What is STEM?
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The United States has become a global leader, in large part, through the genius and hard work of its scientists, engineers and innovators. Yet today, that position is threatened as comparatively few American students pursue expertise in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.* Due to a high demand for these jobs and shortage of a skilled workforce for these disciplines, many in education, defense and energy industries are focused on providing opportunities and encouraging youth engagement in STEM.
How does STEM fit into First Tee?
The Game of Golf is completely linked to the world of STEM. STEM provides a better understanding of the game of golf, from the design of the course, to the physics behind the golf swing, to the equipment that is used both while playing and practicing. By bridging the game of golf and STEM with First Tee, participants are able to learn about STEM while still learning the values and life skills that First Tee teaches, all while playing golf.
First Tee STEMLinks Program
In 2014, a new, robust STEM golf program launched and made available to chapters under the Nine Healthy Habit of “School.” First Tee STEMLinks program, funded by the Shell Oil Company, provides another exciting tool to engage middle school age participants in a chapter-based program and encourage teenage retention and progression! Fun, engaging STEM activities focused on the physics of golf beginning with golf experiments contained in the “Front Nine Range Book.”
STEMLinks Summer Camp
First Tee – Naples/Collier will be incorporating First Tee STEMLinks program in all of our Summer Camp Programs. Participants will learn about The Science of the putting green, The Biomechanics of the Golf Swing, The Aerodynamics in Golf, and much more.
